Well, the weather is absolutely perfect today! I painted over in Nicaso Ca.Painting out under direct sun light really takes a lot outta you. I feel really sluggish arriving back home and just couldn't get into the groove of painting this apple.
Not chancing a long drive and a good chance of getting rained out from painting. So decided to stay home a clean up my studio area. Can't believe how much clutter accumulates in such a short span of time!
The weather is so horrible today. I was looking forward to the life drawing session in San Francisco, but not with this rain pouring down. Parking will be impossible. 50% chance of rain tomorrow....I'm supposed to paint on location to help spread awareness to save the Granada Theater in Morgan Hill. We shall see....
Had a shaky start on this one, not knowing if I would be able to achieve the dramatic lighting I had in mind. Turned out to be a fun lighting study using digital pastels.
A couple of Red Washington Apples sun bathing on a park bench. Nice little break from the rain.
I thought this might be a difficult angle to capture, but it was a really fun painting.
Probably my favorite apple, the "Asian Apple Pear"....which are much more expensive. I don't think this qualifies for an apple. So here's another sketch....so I'm not cheating :)

Unless I go apple picking, I'll never get an apple with leaves attached to the stem. So I decided to add one in this painting :)
Downloaded the app "SketchBook Express". I've used Sketchbook Pro when I demo'd at MacWorld but I never got the hang of the user interface. But I decided to give the iphone app a try.
I've heard of artist that use a stylus type pen to draw....similar to a Nintendo DS. But this requires you to use your finger. The biggest gripe that I had is that this app did not recognize a few of my strokes....as if it FROZE, causing a little frustration. You also have to be careful when selecting a tool because you can easily make an unwanted dot smack in the middle of your illustration. Just like anything unfamiliar or new......It'll take some time to get used to.
Can't believe we're almost half way through February?!
Spent a day at the Legion of Honor museum, San Francisco. After taking a break to sketch an apple, I headed back home with a full dose of inspiration!
This sketch was started on my Nintendo DS and the battery died while I was adding the highlights. Since I couldn't find my charger, I finished it up on my tablet.
Lots of painting projects with deadlines next week. Taking a break from the gouache and whipping up a quick 15 minute digital study.
Accidentally knocked over my mug....luckily I finished drinking my coffee beforehand. So I thought I'd make a still life out of it.
Visited some friends for lunch. It was convenient they had a bowl of apples I could draw from :)
The rain took a break today! So I decided to get some fresh air and sketched on my NDS at a park bench.
This one was an imaginary sketch. I just felt like painting instead of experimenting with the gradient tool. That's the great thing about this project...everyday is spontaneous. The whole point is to create and commit (just 324 days left - Yikes!)
That's getting closer to what I mentioned yesterday. Being able to use gradients in solid shapes. I'll try to push it more tomorrow.
Tried something new with solid and gradient filled shapes. This gives me a few new ideas for future digital sketches, although it's a much slower process compared to sketching with a tablet or mouse.
Alomost forgot to upload this quick sketch during lunch. It has really been convenient drawing on the NDS, but I'm starting to miss using my gouache and watercolors.
